sense of comfort not seen by previous generations. With just a click of a
button, the world is at one’s fingertips. For instance, the smartphone has

will be an increasing number of different applications for artificial
intelligence (AI). From SIRI to self-driving cars, artificial intelligence is
advancing beyond the generally portrayed humanoid robots. Providing new job
opportunities and higher efficiency in the workspace AI should be seen as an
opportunity for the world to thrive.

For decades, the idea of AI has been mostly confined to the imaginations of directors and producers of movies like Transformers and Ex Machina. Yet, this type of technology is present today,
but remains overlooked, despite the fact that it will redefine the way
companies and industries operate. Machine learning is an application of a AI
that provides systems the ability to automatically learn and improve from
experience without being explicitly programmed. It focuses on the development
of computer programs that can access data and learn for themselves. This is why
machine learning will become one of the most widely utilized. As
a doctor completes diagnose, one of the most complicating and tedious
processes, there are many detailed factors that they have to keep in mind, such
as the specific color of whites of a patient’s eye to the food they had for
breakfast. Fortunately, machines can aid in helping physicians make the correct
evaluation in diagnosis and treatment, therefore serving as an extension of

opportunities will open up to create these forms of AI, while other jobs may be
created to control them. Some may argue that robots are unable to perform
complex tasks that revolve around generating new ideas. It is theorized that
companies and industries will become dependent on various branches of AI,
projecting that “Around 40% of jobs will be taken by robots by 2030,” (Hudson,
May 2017). While this statement may be true, AI will lead to the availability
of a plethora of jobs, especially those in the area of services, because robots
lack assets needed to complete these jobs. These assets include creativity,
emotional intelligence, and social skills – all things that humans are capable
of doing. To further prove this, 49 percent of the world working class is
employed in the tertiary sector of the economy which consists of jobs providing
services (World Bank Group, March 2017). This is the sector that robots
contribute the least to due to their lack of social skills. Therefore, humans
would have access to these jobs, for robots cannot carry them out. In fact,
“the Bureau of Labor and Statistics has estimated that jobs in the mental
health field and social workers who work with substance abusers will grow by
19% by 2024.” (McFarland, October 2017) When technology begins to malfunction,
human support/labor will be needed to fix the issue. As society begins to rely
highly on AI, the need for more technical skills will be needed to maintain,
replace, and update these systems. (Mynul Khan, the CEO of Field Nation, 2017).
Both humans and extensions of AI would benefit from mutual work and support.

In
addition, products of Artificial Intelligence can serve as personal
assistants to improve job function. Machine learning is a crucial component for
personal assistants. It collects and refines information based on user
involvement over time. The software is connected into the everyday work
environment which further enhances productivity in the workforce. Furthermore,
AI is being utilized by companies to monitor information technology (IT)
network systems as a means to mitigate the risk of cybersecurity attacks.
Therefore, with most companies becoming completely digitized, the need to keep
company and customer data safe is of utmost importance. Jobs in the technology,
media, and telecommunications industries expect to see significant increases
for AI applications for new products and services in the near future:
specifically, a “52%-point increase within the next five years” (Columbus,
2017). Machine learning and AI both call for an efficient and productive work
atmosphere.

As AI technology matures, businesses are projected to
implement artificial intelligence in the pursuit of higher efficiency. One way
this can be accomplished is by eliminating the need to complete mundane
tasks such as, scheduling meetings,
booking taxis or flights, and transcribing meeting notes. An alternative is
using AI-enabled tools (Nick Ismail, 2017). In fact, “in the future, AI will shorten commute even further via
self-driving cars that result in up to 90% fewer accidents, more efficient ride
sharing to reduce the number of cars on the road by up to 75%, and smart
traffic lights that reduce wait times by 40% and overall travel time by 26% in
a pilot study” (Narula, 2017).  As factories
continue to manufacture their specialized goods, the need of AI will increase by exhibiting many
beneficial abilities needed in everyday life. While off the factory floor, AI would be able to predict what will be
needed for production and when. The
company Epicor Software provided insight on how AI has improved productivity
for a chain of businesses. “Epicor Software has a manufacturing customer in the Netherlands who is outfitting
“smart bins” with wireless IoT devices which directly feed the ERP system.
These bins are shipped to subcontractors with material for outside processing.
The contractor presses the buttons affixed to the container to signal when the
bin should be picked up for return or sent to the next contractor. This
customer is next planning to consolidate the mobile bin data with information
received from internal machines, and then AI can predict whether, for example,
building parts in a different order reduces manufacturing time.” (Johnson,
2017). To further enhance the claim that AI improves efficiency, specifically
for those who are employed, the AI
assistant, x.ai’s Amy, automatically schedules meeting for users which alleviates the hassle of
arranging and rearranging meetings. However,
the idea of Iron Man’s Jarvis and the USS Enterprise’s computer, Apple
Siri brought this idea to life and gets the distinction of being the first AI,
debuting on the iPhone in 2011. These AI tools like Siri, Google Assistant, and
Amazon Alexa are becoming more applicable in the home with uses ranging from
turning the lights on/off to alerting us about price changes for planned
travels. Ultimately, AI will make many of our everyday task easier for
families, companies, and individuals in the workforce.

Artificial Intelligence will never cease to exist.
Therefore, society has the choice whether to fear it or embrace it. If society
chooses to embrace it the chance of success will rise, on the other hand those
who choose to fear it will be left playing catch-up. (Douglas Eldridge, 2017)
AI has an increasing number of benefits that outweigh the risks such as an
increase in job opportunities and higher efficiency.  “The key takeaway is
the fact that AI could lead us into arguably one of the biggest social and
economic revolutions the world has ever seen.” (Marr, 2017) Hence, the world
has a tremendous opportunity to thrive.
