Cancer for someone to feel overwhelmed or confused

Cancer is one of the biggest and scariest challenges a person can face. There are worries about the future and the toll care can cause patients to suffer both physically and emotionally. Therefore, people with cancer want to do everything they can to combat the disease, manage its symptoms and cope with the side effects of treatment. Many patients turn to complementary and alternative health approaches as well as conventional medical treatment. During this essay I will discuss five complementary and five alternative treatments that patients tend to explore when they don’t see any substantial improvement with their condition and are in hopes of improving their situation along with the conventional medical treatments.
The Dreaded Word Cancer
It is normal for someone to feel overwhelmed or confused when diagnosed with cancer. There are so many people coming at you at once that are relatively strangers to you, poking and prodding, running multiple tests and throwing all kinds of different options at you all at once to where your head is spinning. Why is Cancer so scary? May be a question that person that has just been given a malignant diagnosis may be asking themselves. Because you can die right? You would think that would be an obvious answer to a stupid question, but there are a lot of things people can die from that they are not afraid of. For example, stepping off a curb and being hit by a car, murder by a significant other, or choking on a pen cap that their teacher has warned them repeatedly to stop doing. However, people are petrified of cancer.
Cancer is scary because it is recognizable, it is not because we may have known someone with cancer, it is because we have all known someone who has died from cancer. Cancer is scary because it creeps up on you like a thief in the night, it robs things from you that make you who you are bit by bit then piece by piece. It takes your hair, your energy, your resilience, your hopes and dreams and then moves on to taking your social life, your image and your sense of humor. Sooner or later it just leaves you as a shell of the person you used to recognize in the mirror. Cancer is scary because it might not kill you, buy it will stay with you. You will always be tha friend or loved one that had cancer that one time and will always have to live with the fear that it may come back. But most of all cancer is scary because the treatment is brutal and long, truth be told most of the things people fear about cancer are mostly related to the treatment.
Despite the fear of cancer making an appearance in our lives or the lives of the people that we know and love, the good news is that there have been giant steps in medicine against the fight against cancer that developed great prospects in treatment and prevention. There are many different types of cancer treatment it all depends upon the type of cancer a person may have and how advanced the cancer may be. Some people with cancer will only have one treatment, but most people will have a combination of several treatments.
The most common forms of conventional medical cancer treatment are the following:
• Surgery- When used to treat cancer, surgery is a procedure in which a surgeon removes cancer from your body
• Radiation Therapy- Is a type of cancer treatment that uses high doses of radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors
• Chemotherapy- Is a type of cancer treatment that uses drugs to kill cancer cells.
• Immunotherapy- Is a type of treatment that helps your immune system fight cancer.
What is CAM?
Complementary and Alternative are both terms that we use to describe the many kinds of products, practices, and treatment that are not part of conventional mainstream medicine. You may hear them referred to as methods to help relieve symptoms resulting from traditional cancer treatment and help improve the quality of life during this difficult time. We call this method “Complementary” because they are used in addition to a person’s medical treatment for cancer. You may also hear them mentioned when discussing methods that claim to prevent, diagnose, or treat cancer. These methods are called “Alternative” because they are used instead of using proven medical treatments.
People that have been diagnosed with cancer are turning more and more to complementary and alternative medicine” CAM” for many different reasons. The reasons that are strongly endorsed by patients are:
• They valued the importance on treating the whole person.
• Complementary and alternative treatment would be more effective for their illness than traditional orthodox treatment
• Complementary and alternative treatment would enable them to take a more active part in maintain their health than traditional orthodox treatment
• Patients are dissatisfied with conventional treatment because it has been ineffective, has produced adverse side effects, or is impersonal, too technologically-oriented, and/too expensive.
• Alternative and Complementary therapies are attractive because they are more compatible with patients’ values, world-view, spiritual/religious philosophy or beliefs regarding the nature and meaning of health and illness.
Complementary methods as stated previously are used alongside conventional medical treatments. A good complementary advisor or therapist will not claim that the complementary method will cure cancer, but they will encourage a person to discuss any therapies with a cancer doctor or general practitioner. Complementary methods are available from many different types of people and different organizations not just in the United States but also worldwide. There are many different types of complementary methods, including:
• Oncology Massage Therapy
• Aromatherapy
• Pet Therapy
• Acupuncture
• Herbal medicine
There are health professionals that do support patients battling with cancer that are using complementary methods. They can see that some of these methods can help people to cope better with the diagnosis of cancer and the side effects from the traditional treatments. However, there are still some health professionals that are hesitant for their patients to use these methods, this is since many of these methods have not scientifically tested in the same way as conventional treatment.
Many patients that have been given the diagnosis of cancer have various reasons for wanting to also try alternative methods of treatment. Some people may choose to use an alternative method instead of starting conventional treatment or some people may choose to stop their conventional cancer treatment and consider switching to an alternative treatment method. In either instance, alternative methods are used instead of and not with conventional medical treatment.
There are instances where an alternative therapist will claim to be able to cure a person’s cancer with their methods, even if conventional medical treatment hasn’t been able to. Or for instance, an alternative therapist may tell a person given the diagnosis of cancer that conventional medical treatment is harmful. A trustworthy and honest alternative therapist with good ethical standards and an established reputation would not claim to do this.
All conventional cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, must go through rigorous testing by law to prove that they work, there has yet to be any scientific or medical evidence to show that alternative methods can cure cancer.
Some alternative methods are unsafe and have the possibility of causing harmful side effects, or they may interact with conventional medical treatments. A patient giving up conventional cancer treatment could reduce their chance of curing or controlling their cancer.
Alternative methods have been cleverly promoted today so that people that feel they must grasp onto any chance of hope and feel that they have nowhere else to turn read about these methods and think that they work very well. Unfortunately, these claims are not proven by scientific evidence and give people false hope.
Some examples of Alternative cancer therapies are:
• Hyperthermia
• Ozone Therapy
• Blue Scorpion Venom
• Insulin Potentiation Therapy
• Homeopathic Immune Modulator
